How to Identify Wrong Answers on the ACT
7 min de lectura · Entrenau
On the ACT by ACT, Inc., every question includes answer choices designed to mislead: distractors. Learning to identify and eliminate them is one of the most valuable skills you can develop, because it turns uncertain questions into guaranteed points.
What Are Distractors?
Distractors are answer choices that look correct at first glance but contain subtle errors. They are crafted based on the most common student mistakes: concept mix-ups, partial calculations, and literal interpretations of figurative language.
There are several types: the partially correct distractor (contains some truth but omits something essential), the extreme distractor (uses words like "always," "never," "all"), and the out-of-context distractor (introduces true but irrelevant information).
Elimination Techniques
Step 1: Read the full question before looking at the choices. Form your own answer in your head.
Step 2: Immediately discard choices that contradict information from the passage or prompt.
Step 3: Be suspicious of choices with absolute words ("always," "never," "all") — they are rarely correct on well-designed tests.
Step 4: If two choices are very similar, one of them is probably correct. Analyze the difference between them.

How to Practice Detection
The best way to train is to take practice tests and, after each question, analyze why each incorrect choice is wrong. It is not enough to know which one is correct; understanding why the others are wrong makes you immune to that type of distractor.
On Entrenau, every question includes an AI explanation that analyzes all the answer choices. Use this tool to turn every mistake into a learning opportunity.
Tip: Keep a log of which distractor types catch you most often. Knowing your pattern helps you stay alert on the real test.
