ACT Structure & Scoring

ACT Overview

The ACT is a standardized test administered by ACT, Inc. and is widely accepted by colleges and universities across the United States as part of the admissions process. It measures readiness for college-level work across four academic areas.

The exam consists of four multiple-choice sections — English, Math, Reading, and Science — plus an optional Writing section (essay). All multiple-choice questions have four answer choices (A/B/C/D or F/G/H/J).

Sections Tested

English: Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills across 5 passages. 75 questions in 45 minutes.

Math: Covers pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. 60 questions in 60 minutes. Calculator permitted.

Reading: Assesses reading comprehension across 4 passages (prose fiction/literary narrative, social science, humanities, natural science). 40 questions in 35 minutes.

Science: Evaluates interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving in the natural sciences. 40 questions in 35 minutes.

Scoring System

Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36. Your composite score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. The optional Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 2-12 and does not affect the composite.

There is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every question. The national average composite score is approximately 20. Top-tier universities often expect scores of 30 or above.

Preparation Strategy

English and Math have the most questions, so mastering these sections offers the highest return on your study time. Focus on grammar rules for English and algebra/geometry fundamentals for Math.

The Science section tests data interpretation more than science knowledge — practice reading graphs, tables, and experimental summaries quickly.
